Subject: RE: Brioso 2002/Susana Balbo Malbec 2001
Dear Susana, thanks for you kind and prompt answers. I took some time to reply because I wanted to give you my impressions over the Susana Balbo Malbec 2001 that I tasted with some friends this weekend on a full-blind "cata". I always desired to hold a tasting of such quality-wine because I needed to challenge the misconcept that new-world wines did not develop well in the bottle. Therefore one is supposed to drink as soon as it gets to the market which I don't agree with.
Except me, nobody knew the variety of grape, its vintage, producer, geographical zone nor retail price. The only information allowed at the beginning was the wine was red because it was poured into their glasses. The bottle has been kept in the cellar at 16C and served at 17-18C after almost two hours of decanting.
The SBM presented a bright dark-red color with an small outer ring indicating some years of age. I couldn't notice the dark-violet component that distinguishes a Malbec. The aromas were quite complex. People could sense red berries, tobacco, leather, syrup, oak, vanilla, raisins, coffee, herbaceous notes which turned more difficult to guess which wine it was. On the palate, the SBM had rounded tannins, little astringency, no bitterness and good acidity. The flavors were those of black currants, pepper, jelly and licorice.
And now the funniest section of the wine tasting: discovering the wine. Here some comments that people made:
- Too structured and full-bodied to be a French wine
- Not astringent enough to be an Italian
- Too elegant to be a new-world
- It has some acidity which is not part of the Californian and South-American style
- It must be Portuguese. It is a Douro wine!
After disclosing that was not European and it belonged to the Americas, people retasted again and made more comments:
- It is a Californian Cabernet!
- No way. Californian Cabs are more fruity and less complex
- Sure it is Californian. It has plenty of vanilla and tobacco from the American oaks
- Californian Cabs lacks acidity
Then I said it was from South America. And contrary to some opinions, it was a blend of different grapes in which Cabernet was not predominant. And everybody once again returned to their glasses less confident than ever:
- I knew it has Cabernet Sauvignon. Is that from Chile?
- It must be one of the top Cabs (Sena, Errazuriz or Almaviva)
When I finally mentioned that it was a SBM from a blend of Malbec, Cabernet and Bonarda, my friends were astonished and had the following impressions:
- Malbecs tend to be over-extracted, almost black in color
- Malbec wines usually has some residual sugar that made them easier to drink, that was not perceptible in the SBM
- Most Malbec producers exaggerate on the alcohol, contrary to the elegance of SBM
- It can't be a Malbec!
This is the end of the story. Needless to say that they opened all the other bottles, leaving no future samples for me. Great wine!
Regards
Ricardo Sassatani

Subject: Brioso 2002/Susana Balbo Malbec 2001
Dear Susana, I am a big fan of your wines. Currently I hold half case of Brioso 2002 and Susana Balbo 2001 that I purchased in 2005 on my trip to Mendoza and Buenos Aires.
What is the timeframe to drink those bottles? Are they ready or should I wait more?
Thanks
Ricardo Sassatani

Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petit Verdot y Tannat”.

| Argentina´s underdog grape BONARDA (News & Notes) |
